  1. Hey all,
Kurtis Williams here. My internship starts tomorrow morning and I can't wait to get going. I am going to be working behind the scenes at the Lars Larson Show this summer. I haven't exactly been told what I am doing but I believe I will be doing some fact finding and information gathering for the show. The local show starts at 12, the national one at 3. So working 10-3 will give me a chance to work on getting things ready for both shows.

  2. Hello, my name is Ashley Brugnoli. I will be doing my internship a Southwest Physical Therapy in Coos Bay Oregon, where I will be working with patients and shadowing the therapist perform tasks. I will be working at the clinic, at hospitals and also doing home health, which is where I travel with the therapist to patients homes. I will start this week at the clinic and am looking forward to it.

  3. Good morning all!!! Wednesday was my first day at my internship and it was great. I shadowed some PT's and also some PTA's around the office. I over saw patients, applied ice and heat and also got the machines ready and the appropriate wait set for the patients. I also learned a little about "tens unit," which helps to stimulate the muscles while doing their activities. I'll keep you posted on what I do next week.

  4. Hi all my name is Thomas Bryan. I will be doing my internship at AKT, LLP in Salem, Oregon. At AKT I will be working on Accounts Payable. I will be the interm AP specialist, as the prior one is retiring. I am very excited to be learning so much in a short amount of time and be able to connect what I have learned in the classroom to a practical application.

  5. On Tuesday, June 1st I started my internship full time and it was very exciting to be back after not being in the office for a while. The people at AKT are very friendly and welcoming. They are always excited to have me back in the office. There was some office conflicts this week because higher management wants to move where people are sitting in the office. They temporarily decided to move the finance department to a "cave". I started on a project of putting all past year's invoices to an online database system. Next week I will be starting training on the functioning of the accounts payable system

  6. I have been working at my internship for about 2 weeks now. It has been a very challenging two weeks trying to learn all that I can about the operations of the accounts payable position. I never knew that it took so much to do a simple task as paying a credit card bill. This week the internal finance department officially moved to a new area of the building, which is very close quarters now. I have one more week of training with the current AP person and then I am on my own. I am excited and nervous to hold that kind of responsibility!!

  7. Ok, I apologize for not posting yet, I've had hardware issues with my computer and haven't had much internet access as of late. Anyway, my radio internship is going swimmingly and throws all sorts of things at me. I work Tuesday-Friday, 10-3. 10-12 is devoted to finding new and interesting news stories that have two points of view and can be debated on either side. That way callers on either side can make their arguments and a good discussion can be had. 10-12 I basically surf the internet for these stories. For instance: There was a story on the Environmental Protection Agency looking into farming practices of the Amish because of excessive manure run off. Some would say the Amish are already not subject to many government regulations so they're farming techniques shouldn't be scrutinized by the government either. Others might say the Chesapeake Bay is being polluted by the run off and there needs to be regulation. Several of my stories have been debated on air.

12-3 during the local part of the show, I screen calls to make sure the interaction between host and caller will not slow the whole show to a halt. Also I ready guests for interviews and call guests who are about to come on. The first Friday I was there, we had an in-studio wedding. The host, Lars Larson, is ordained and a couple of fans of the show wanted him wed them so we got cake, flowers, a photographer, a violinist, the whole nine. Very fun place to be working. The studio I sit in is next to the KXL news room full of phones that ring all day with news stories and traffic alerts. The buzz and energy in there is always high so that makes it a great atmosphere to be working in.

  8. June 10 was my second time at my internship. Again I over saw patients and leaned about how their accidents happened. I set up their equipment for them and made sure that they were doing their exercises properly. Helping the PT's take measurements of the patients range of motion and comparing it to when they first came in was another thing that I helped out with. It was really neat being able to see how the patient progress and improve their strength.

  9. This last week was relatively the same as the first two. Working from 10-3 Tuesday-Friday. Chris Dudley, candidate for Oregon governor was on the program, Apolo Ohno was going to be on promoting something but canceled at the last minute. While during the 10-12 block of my shift I come up with ideas for the national show, that airs 3-4 and 7-9 locally, and unfortunately I don't get to listen to what topics he actually discusses. In other words, I'm not too sure how many of my ideas have been getting on air. But the producer has liked the work I've been doing, and I've enjoyed doing it. It's fun to kick around banter and ideas with like-minded people who all appreciate the political happenings of any given day,

  10. Hello again!!! Last week I was at my internship on Wednesday, Thursday and on Friday. On Wednesday I started my aid training which I think is really neat because I will then be a certified aid for the PT's and just in the gym in general. I have a list of things I have to perform in order to complete my training, but I am already a 1/4 of the way done. This training taught me how to properly take people out of traction devices and and how to set up all of the machines in the gym. I also leaned how to read the chart and give the patient certain exercises to do. On Thursday I did what I always do and shadowed the PT's and talked with some really great patients. I find it amazing how much the patients begin to trust you and look forward to seeing you throughout the week. They have some pretty amazing stories, especially when they tell you how they had their accident and such... Then on Friday I went around to all the medical centers and handed out referral pads and a little bag of goodies to all of the doctors and the their secretaries and the medical centers in the area. This was just a little PR that has to be done to get the offices name out there and hopefully gain a little more patients. It was a lot of fun interacting with all the people and getting to know the people that refer us the patients.

  11. This week, I went in just on Thursday which was the 24th and spent a full 8 hours there. Again I just interact with the patients and just develop a relationship with them. I found the the more you interact with them, the more the patients feel comfortable with you. I can't believe how excited people are when the see that I am there again. I have one woman who I help every time she comes in. We have developed quit a relationship and I'm now teaching her how to perform her exercises on her own. I also just try to help keep the gym picked up and the rooms clean so the others don't have to work so hard... So far I really like my internship...

  12. This past week I was officially on my own and was finished with training for the Accounts payable. I spent three days working on Employee Expenses. I learned how hard it is to get people to turn in receipts. I thought that it would be easier because the people are going to want to get paid so they should just turn in their receipts on their own and not make me track them down. Once I finished and processed all the expenses I had to do my first check run. This was fairly easy, but since friday was the firm's community service day we only worked a half a day. This made the check running stressful because of the time crunch. I did not really understand how much the position entails until I started doing it on my own. Also this made my supervisors realize that there is so much that goes into this position. This is helping her to keep this position in the United States. The community service was a great way for all the employees to interact outside of a work environment. It also allowed for relationships to grow. This was the first year that the CEO participated in the 3 years that I have participated in the event. I am really learning a lot in my internship so far

  13. So last week I worked Wed-Fri, wasn't feeling good on Tuesday. It's funny, most people say, gut through it if you aren't feeling well, but because the show is all about the host, my boss, the producer, is really up tight about anyone being remotely sick in the studio. Crazy week for me. If you haven't been following news, you are behind in this business. Al Gore was accused of sexual assault by a masseuse and the lady's best friend called me (phone screener) because she listens to the show and we had interviewed the friend before all the other TV stations had her on at 5. She also gave me, just me, the name of the accuser before most of the news and any of the public knew it. Didn't serve me any good but it was interesting to be involved in a small, little part of this. I think my favorite part so far is fielding calls from congressmen, candidates for senate, important guests, etc.

  14. This past week was probably the most stressful week that I have had so far because it of month end processes. This is when we have to reconcile bank accounts and post all expenses for the month. There was so much to get done in a short amount of time. I am sure that if I had been doing this for several years then this would go much more smoothly, but since it is my first month end I got stressed a bit.

I have learned during the last month of my internship that I need to stay extremely organized in this position to ensure that payments are being made. I have learned to be firm with company policy toward employees and partners, but also knowing when I am over my head and have to go to the controller for advice.

I am starting to feel more comfortable with all of the processes of the position. Shortly I will be training the person who will take over for me when I return to school on August 13th for RA training. That will be the real test as if I accomplished my goal.

  15. Last week was great, regarding June 27 to July 2. Again I did my usual and shadowed the physical therapist, and also took on a patient and went through his whole exercise program with him. I am really starting to feel more confident about reading the charts and am starting to be able to read some of the abbreviation they use. I also worked at the front desk a little and checked patients in and also made them more appointments. I also attended a office meeting where the national health care was talked about and about medicare rates. They are not happy with either one of the topics. We also had a lady come in and one of the therapist looked at her for free which I thought was very nice. You don't see many offices do that very often.

  16. The week of 6/28-7/2 was another solid week. I worked Wed-Fri again and got to call and talk to former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary. More and more the host is happy with the fact finding I am doing. It was interesting how the place slowed down before and after the fourth of July break, even though, as the saying goes, news never stops.

Aside from that, I get sort of an affirmation that the thoughts I have on politics is something felt by a lot of people, namely the people I work with, and callers.

  17. This week I not only was working in the gym and with patients, but I was also working up at the front desk and other parts of the office. Their I learned how to use the fax machine and send doctors patients information about their progress and new evaluations that we had preformed. I also helped file papers into the files of the patients and also helped fill out paper work to help with the discard process. Next week I will be helping at the front again, and on Thursday I will be back in the gym. It really amazes me how many of the patients remember my name, because I have no idea who they are. It is also great to see the patient progress, like when we first had one woman come in she couldn't even move her neck backward, but now she can move it at a 40 degree angle. Watching the peoples faces as the improve their abilities is so worth the seven years it takes to become a PT.

  18. Ok, after this post I will be caught up. Last week, 7/5-7/9. Same as the ones before. I'm working more with audio like finding things online and passing them on to the powers that be to be aired. I like editing audio a lot but I haven't have a chance to do that here, yet. Hopefully I will get an opportunity to do that, although the host does that and he's rather particular.

  20. This week I was the main aid in the gym and filled in for people while they were out on vacation. I did the usual and helped patients with their therapy and went through their exercises and helped to teach them how to do them on their own. I also helped with some re-evaluation, where we remeasure the patients range of motion and how they have improved from their first evaluation. That was very exciting to tell the patients how they have improved and to see their reaction. Writing in chart notes and coping earlier goals was another thing I did, so then when that person came back in we could see if they had reached those goals. I have also almost completed my requirements to be a certified aid!!!

  21. This week I continued to shadow the little boy I am working with and we are working on different new ways from him to calm down. This was a very crazy week because one of the teachers is on vacation and so there is a sub teacher and there is a new intern working who does not know how to work with the kids which has been very interesting. There are a max of 8 kids in this summer school program as of now but soon there will be 9 kids which I am really excited about because the new child is a girl! There are 8 boys right now and soon to be 1 girl. The children here have various diagnosis' and one of the children has been diagnosed as a borderline sociopath which has been really interesting to see. The other children have behavioral problems such as ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). It is interesting to see how a group of kids with different diagnosis' interact in a classroom.

  22. Hello everyone, my name is Tim Wagar and I am interning this summer for a non profit organization called CASA. CASA stands for court appointed special advocates, these are volunteers from the community who are appointed by judges to child abuse and neglect cases in order to be an advocate for the child's best interest. I am interning at the Yamhill County CASA office working on a Volunteer Policies and Guidelines Handbook as well as updating the current CASA Employee handbook. In addition to this I am attending the shelter and dependency hearings at the courthouse as well in order to get a good feel for the legal system.

  23. I am about half way done with my internship at AKT. This has been a intriguing internship. I have learned so much over this course. I know how important it is to communicate with teammembers to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Also I have learned how hard it is to get employees to turn in expense receipts on time. I would have thought it would be easier since they do want to get paid for their expenses. I am also learning how to be on the other side of the interview process to find a replacement for me.

  24. I'm getting more comfortable with the pace of things here at the Lars Larson show. Finding stories is what I do with most of my mornings anyway so I enjoy getting credit for things that I like doing anyway. As far as for screening calls, I stayed late for the national show and talked to Senator Jim Inhofe and later in the week talked to a very well-know conservative blogger, Andrew Breitbart. Still, Lars and his producer, my boss, are happy with the topics/stories I am coming up with.
